Seeking Methods of Healing Depression
Jose Bardelas Methods of Healing Depression By Olga Szewczuk
It seems every time the television goes on, or a bus goes by, there is an advertisement for healing depression. Sometimes, listening to or reading these ads is enough to make you depressed! There are so many side effects, so much that is unknown about how medications work on our minds, that you can be left with a sense of helplessness and fear.
Depression comes in many forms. Those who are clinically depressed usually suffer on and off for long periods of time in their lives. Depression makes you miserable and at times it makes you wish you were not here at all. And the concept of healing depression has, up to now, been more about managing depression.
Pharmaceutical companies are pumping out anti-depressants like candy, but instead causes should be examined. Why are so many people so sad? What ways are not thoroughly being explored to help truly heal depression?
How is depression healed?
If depression comes from a biological source, it can never really be healed. The most that can be done is to try to find ways to alleviate the suffering and promote the best chances for prolonged improvement. This is usually done in the following ways:
* Medication: Different medications affect different neurotransmitters in the brain. It is often a game of hit or miss in trying to find which medication or which medication “cocktail” works best.
* Therapy: can be helpful in offering knowledge and support when you are dealing with depression. If your depression is not biological, but rather due to a specific event or loss, therapy and time can help you heal.
* Exercise: Exercise, even in moderate amounts will help release endorphins in the brain. It is one of the most natural and beneficial ways to offset the symptoms of depression.
* Meditation: Many people find relief of depression through the process of meditation in various forms, such as yoga. Do not misinterpret this, it is not necessary to practice yoga to meditate. Meditation has the power to keep you thinking in the positive and not being drowned in the sadness that surrounds depression.
Depression is a very strong and overpowering force to be reckoned with, but it can be done. Healing depression for some requires time and some of the methods discussed. Others who suffer from an organic depression work hard to manage symptoms while a true cure can be found. Never give up and remember the power of your mind and your spirit to carry you through the most difficult times.
