But then, wouldn’t you look ridiculous if you were at a pub or at a formal restaurant? You can’t expect people to avoid staring at you while you take care of your business in the bathroom. It even gets harder for women, because they may have to worry about reapplying their makeup back on. Unless you’re prepared to look preposterous with your outlandish ways, you could always look at your other options.
For starters, you should know what bad breath is. It is otherwise known as halitosis. Other people suffer from extreme cases that people can smell it even when they’re a good distance away. As much as the kind ones try to be nice to you, no one really likes to smell garbage now, would they? Do you want people to say that every time you open your mouth, it seems as if there’s something decomposing inside? This is actually even worse that foot odor. At least with the latter, you just need to cover them up with shoes. The intensity of the smell may differ during the day. Obviously, your problem may not be as apparent when you’ve recently brushed your teeth. But after a few hours, you start feeling as if something is reeking inside.
Fact: there are hundreds of different types of bacteria that can thrive inside your mouth. Many of them produce foul odors the longer they stay inside. Studies show that the smell is due to the anaerobic breakdown of proteins as they turn into amino acids. When these acids break down into smaller elements, gases are released. This is what is responsible for the smell. The spaces between your teeth aren’t the only culprit here. You can look at the different areas of your mouth. They say that you have to check the back of your tongue as well.
The question now is, are you willing to suffer through it? If you plan to live the life of a monk, then this definitely won’t be an issue for you. But if you’re like the majority of the population, it’s time to consider every aspect of your lifestyle. There are many causes that exacerbate your dilemma. Here are some of the main reasons behind bad breath:
1. Smoking. This leads to the accumulation of tar and nicotine on your teeth and gums. The more it builds up, the more you’ll smell like an ashtray.
2. People who suffer from sinusitis. Postnasal drips can accumulate on your tongue and thus, the stench of mucus can be smelled by the other people.
3. Gum diseases. People over the age of 35 are especially prone to this. The only way to ward this off is to visit your dentist regularly.
4. Dry mouth. This little situation is especially apparent early in the morning. When you sleep, your mouth dries up and has no way of washing away the dirt that has been accumulated. Hey, your mouth needs a shower too!
5. Diet. Garlic, onions, and too much protein, in particular, produce foul-smelling gases in the intestinal tract. Because there’s nowhere for these to go but up, the stench could traverse its way up your throat and out your mouth.
It all boils down to being proactive about your health and hygiene. The easiest cure would be to regularly floss your teeth and brush them at least twice a day. Use toothpastes that contain fluoride. You’re not a baby, and you need some of that minty stuff in your mouth. Of course, this is all assuming that the source can be found in your mouth. Otherwise, try to even out your meals and have a healthy balance among all food groups.
